Horse of the Month - December 2008

The Philanderer

"Phil is a 7 year old grey large riding horse by Kilvington Scoundrel. He was bred by Anna Macey out of her mare, Titania's Dream. Anna came to watch Phil at HOYS and brought with her a picture of the mare at a show. It was exactly the same as a pic that appeared of Phil in one of the magazines - an amazing likeness.

His early days are slightly hazy - various people appear to have had him/shown him/owned him/broken him. All I know is that we received a phone call 3 years ago asking if we may be interested in buying him. We went to see him, fell in love - who wouldn't! and brought him home.

He is a quirky horse, lovely to deal with, a real sweetie but certainly has his moments. Sometimes he reacts really badly to applause, sometimes he doesn't - he used to spook at the jumps at the side of the arena. These were subsequently moved - but he still spooks at that spot.

We've shown him for 3 seasons. In his first season his major success was being Novice Riding Horse Champion at the Nat Champs, and being Reserve Supreme of Show. In 2007, he was 2nd at Horse of the Year Show and was Reserve Champion. This year he has exceeded all expectations - Champion at Towerlands, East of England and Supreme at P(UK) South. At Royal Windsor he did the side saddle for the first time (having only worn the saddle twice before) and won a huge class. He then went to the Royal International, won his class, his championship and was then Supreme Horse - a fantastic achievement.

At Horse of the Year Show this year he won his class and then stood Riding Horse champion.

Phil is now having a well deserved holiday in the field with his best mate, Boots (Silverstream).

So many people have said that watching him gives them goosebumps. He literally floats - Jayne says his trot is like a hovercraft on a calm sea. Apparently I'm going to have a sit-on when he's back in work!

I love him to bits but he not only gives me goose bumps but a vastly inflated heart rate when watching him!"

Horse or Pony of the Month - November 2008 - Lizzie!

"Lizzie is a eleven year old 14hh chestnut mare, that we bought last year for our daughter. We are relative newcomers to showing, but with the help and advice of the Show Ring Forum, the combination have been very successful at local level this year. Lizzie has won almost every Riding Club/Pony Club Pony class she has been entered in and has also been well-placed in Show Hunter Pony classes and came third in their first ever P(UK) SHP class, as well as qualifying for the Marriages Riding Club Pony Championship. In addition, my daughter also won the Champion Child Rider trophy at the Edenbridge and Oxted Show, riding Lizzie.

Aside from showing, Lizzie participates in a range of Pony Club and Riding Club activities and has won and been placed in showjumping, dressage and tetrathlon competitions, as well going to rallies and Senior Camp, being in the Area dressage team and giving my daughter her first hunting experiences. She has transformed my daughter from a child who quaked at the thought of jumping 1'6" to one that happily will jump 3'9" in a chase-me-charlie! At home, she is fond of cuddles and is happy to be ridden bareback round the field or play handy pony games. All in all, she has given my daughter a fantastic, fun-filled year!"
