Horse of the Year Show, 2008

The Show Ring members had a tremendous HOYS - not only were there over 20 horses and ponies belonging to TSR members, but we also had some significant wins in a variety of classes.

Intermediate Show Riding Type Champion of the Year - 1st and Champion

Paschal High Flyer - 6yr old bay gelding owned by Sheila and Hazel Broom and produced by Team Harvey.
"Despite me riding Fly in Hack classes all season, and qualifying him for HOYS, I decided I couldn't cope with the pressure of HOYS and so he was ridden in the Large Hacks at HOYS by Martin Skelton who produces Fly along with John Harvey and Greer Taverner. He did amazingly well coming 3rd in the class, a fantstic result as we were just simply hoping for a rosette!

In the Large Intermediate Show Riding Type class he was again ridden by Martin as I am too old for these classes. He did a wonderful show (we later found out he scored 59/60!) and unbelieveably won the class by 8 marks! A dream come true for us all, and only bettered by him also winning the championship. Amazingly emotional day.

Watching them in the Supreme on Sunday in front of a packed house was wonderful and an experience none of us will forget. Thank you Fly for being a true horse of a lifetime for us."

Hack Champion of the Year - 1st and Champion

Silent Words - Small Hack - owned by Carman Gridley
"Silent Words (Vinny) was purchased in the early summer of 2006 by Rob Walker. Rob was planning on breaking him over the winter so he was turned away with Hatty for the summer. Vinny was a complete gentleman to break and he made his showing debut in May 2007 at Cheshire Premier Spring in the Open Small hack class. It was the first time he had been to a show and he exceeded all our expectations by winning the class and qualifying for the RIHS! Vinny's next outing was the novice hack class at Royal Windsor Oh my goodness he won that too!!! Rob and Vinny finished the most amazing season by winning the Hack Championship at the National show followed by a dream that you never dare dream he won the hack title at the Horse of the Year Show!

Vinny and Rob have a truly fantastic partnership and having had a quiet end part to the season they went on to win the small hack and the championship at Horse of the Year show - WOW!!! Sarah and Robert Walker are great friends and have worked so hard with Vinny to achieve results that are truly gobsmacking! Karl and I will never be able to thank them enough. The last thanks must go to Vinny himself a true gentleman in and out of the stable and a horse of a million lifetimes."

Riding Horse Champion of the Year - 1st and Champion

The Philanderer - owned by Carol Bardo
"The Philanderer (Phil) is a 7 year old grey large riding horse. He has come into his own this year and was Supreme Ridden champion RIHS 08.

Coloured Horse - 1st Cob/Native/Traditional - 1st

The Humdinger - owned by Carol Bardo and Mandy Hughes
"The Humdinger (Dinger) is a 6 year old piebald gelding - the photographer's dream as his ears are only ever forwards! Dinger loves showing and was the winner of over 15 ridden and inhand championships this year with Jayne and Mandy in cob and coloured classes. Champion coloured Bath & West, East of England, Hickstead Derby Meeting, Champion New Vision, Supreme CHAPS south, coloured champion BSHA, in hand winner Windsor, South of England BSHA. Cob champion at Lincoln, New Forest, Thame.

He was 4th in 2008 at RIHS and was the coloured class winner at HOYS 08. In 2007 he won the coloureds at RIHS and was 2nd at HOYS."

Coloured Horse - 8th Non Native Coloured Horse

Eurocenter Cleo - owned by Rebecca Slinn
"Eurocenter Cleo 16.3, is a 6 year old mare by Pedro. We qualified for HOYS in May at Chaps Richmond. Really pleased with her first proper ridden season and couldnt have asked for a better performance from her at HOYS."

Coloured Horse - 2nd Non Native Coloured Horse

Heathersedge Eurovision (Buffy) - owned by Kerrie Ibbotson
is a homebred 6 year old mare. We have had a fairly torrid time with her this season, discovering she had a badly bruised sole at the beginning of June and missing all but the final 3 qualifiers with her as she did not come out again until the beginning of August. She has been home produced this season by myself and my sister, Laurie, who rode her in the qualifiers and the final at HOYS, and as we both work fulltime it has been very difficult. Buffy is not our only horse we show, Tiara her best friend also qualified for the same class at HOYS and so have 2 girls there together was very exciting but also very tricky as they are very attached to each other. Buffy was 2nd at HOYS in 2007 and again was pipped to the post this season and came 2nd again, this time to Red Andes."

SFAS Champion Cob of the Year - 1st

Tullys Brady -owned by Alexie Kirby
"I bought Tullys Brady in Ireland 15 months ago, a recently broken 5 year old. Brady is a pure Irish Draught by The Bard out of Tullys Mist. Brady is a show cob and stands at 154.5cm.

I am delighted with his first showing season, he has tried very hard and grown up alot. In May he qualified for Search for a Star. In June he got a 2nd in the novice cob class at Cheshire.

In August we went to Ponies UK and he got 1st in pollyanna amateur rider, 3rd in the amatuer championship, 6th in the Kemply cob. 1st in the restricted and took the restricted championship. At Uk Showing he won the ridden cob Interclub Challenge in September.

To finish his year he won The Search for a Star cob class at HOYS this October. He is like all cobs, a lovely person, who can be a bit of a handful at times. We look forward to our second year together in the open classes. Attached photo of Brady and I at HOYS."

Silverstream(Boots) is the nicest horse in the entire world. He is a seven year old grey gelding, HW hunter. We bought him at Royal Dublin as a 4 year old where he was Reserve Supreme. In his first season with me was Supreme Hunter Champion at RIHS. Ladies Hunter - 5th

Conspiracy Theory - owner Sarah Hellier
"We got Ted (show name Conspiracy Theory) from Ireland in 2007 as an unbroken 4YO and he went to Alwyne Fradley for breaking and producing. He's an ISH out of an ID mare by Cavalier Two for Joy. We decided earlier this year that as he was so mannerly he may suit being a Ladies Hunter so Jane Cooper came to try him and she agreed to ride him for us.

His first show as a Ladies was Derby Festival of Showing in June where he didn't disgrace himself! Second time out was Great Yorks where he was 3rd, 3rd time out was National Side Saddle Show where he was 2nd and qualified for HOYS. He then went to the National Hunter Champs and was 2nd and experienced first evening performance. Then it was off to HOYS where he exceeded all our expectations and came 5th. He'll stay with Al for the winter and has been cubbing and will do some hunting before it all starts again next year!!"

Ladies Hunter

Natterjack Toad - Owner Breeder - Mrs Patina Pickard, Rider: Miss Rachel Pickard

"Natterjack Toad has been shown since he was a foal. In 2005 as a 6 year old they competed in the SEIB Search for a Star Hunter class where they qualified for the final at Horse of the Year Show (HOYs). They went on to be placed 2nd and also won best turned out at HOYS.

In 2007 they began competing in Ladies Hunter classes, they qualified for the Royal International Horse Show (RIHS) at there first attempt in both Ladies and Amateur hunters. At RIHS in the Ladies Hunter class they were 6th in a very large class, and throughout the season they continued to compete in HOYs qualifiers, narrowly missing out on qualifying. They also competed in the Cleveland Bay class at the Royal Show where they won and were Champion.

In 2008 they were 1st in the Ladies Hunter at New Forest qualifying for HOYS, 7th at the RIHS in the LW Amateur Hunter class and 5th in the Betty Skelton Memorial Side saddle class, won and were Champion Cleveland Bay class at the Royal Show, were 5th at the National hunter show in the LW Amateurs, 2nd in the RIHS Ladies Hunter and also 2nd and reserve champion RIHS LW Amateur Hunter at the Royal County of Berkshire show, and had many other showing successes during the year.

He was winner at the East of England, Three Counties and champion cob at BSHA 08. This year is was 3rd at both RIHS and HOYS."

"Sam Qualified at Addington, where he won the LW class and stood reserve Champion."

The Keystone Cob - owner Carol Bardo

He was the winner at Bath & West, Devon, Shropshire, New Vision and Ashbourne. He was Novice champion at the BSHA National Championships and winner of the Classic HW cobs."

"Tommy Brock is a 7 year old heavyweight cob who I have owned since he was 3 years old. 2008 was his second year competing at HOYS - not bad for a totally home produced cob."

Large Hacks - 4th, Retrained Racehorse - 2nd

Shahzan House - owner Carol Bardo
"Shahzan House
(Debs) is a dark brown large hack who was still racing 15 months ago. He was successful on the flat and had had several wins and placings over the years.

A chance conversation with a friend led to us purchasing him. He has been well placed all year and was 4th RIHS and HOYS in the hack classs. He was also 2nd in the Ex Racehorse class."

Large Hacks

Moonwish Maharajah - owner Michelle Fort
"Moonwish Maharajah is a Large Hack Ridden and Produced by Alwyne Fradley Owned, loved and treasured by his owner Michelle Fort Bred by Linda Hallet out of Somerset Morn A Yorkshire Owned Horse!!"

Collier - owner Nikki Reeder
"Collier and I had the most amazing time at HOYS coming 2nd in the Search for a Star Cob Final. Collier arrived from Reid Finlay pretty much untouched in February 2007 and, despite being a little sharp and a little scary at times, has exceeded all expectations in a relatively short timescale. He went to his first show at the beginning of May still very green and wearing his little rubber snaffle (bless) and just about two months later, looking very grown up, he qualified for HOYS and fulfilled one of my lifetime ambitions. Competing at HOYS was every bit as special as I hoped and now I've had a taste of it, I'd certainly like to do it again one day - hopefully, with Collier's help, it won't be a one off experience!"
